OAKFIRE

Yet another wildfire,
I come undone again,
the firescars of summer
emerge, we carry
the scars deep inside,
as we watch mesmerized by ash
smoke calligraphing the sky,
while the skeletons of trees,
ancient oak and madrone
hold vigil with wind and clouds.

Living in this world of fire
we constantly check the horizon
for signs of the approaching inferno,
we make plans, and wonder
if we can make it home in time
to grab memories packed in bags.
Everything comes down to this:
our lives are compartmentalized
and categorized according to
want and need.
