THE WAY BACK

Finding the way back is never easy.
Those undefined obstacles
the divide of the self from the other,
becoming monologue, or is it soliloquy?
All those things we’ve left unsaid,
when you wake up in the middle of the night,
and wished you had phrased it better.
Those waves tucking into the shore of sleep,
are packed with remorse and regret.
Inexplicably at 3 AM, you remember
how you tortured the poor sensitive plant
until it died of exhaustion,
watching its leaves rise and fall.
And what about the kitten’s whiskers?
So what if you were six, you knew better.
There were were other transgressions.
The moon caught in the web of powerlines,
is a full note held on a celestial scale.
An old worry, like those lost trailheads of memory,
a tarantella of dead leaves, small layers of the past.
Whatever we cannot fix comes back to haunt us.

THE BEGINNING OF TRUTH

There is always an infinite supply of uncertainty and fear,
which is far easier to mine than following your dreams.
I took instructions from the sky to talk less,
not allowing love in. I was accustomed to abandonment,
and I continued on, in love with my own darkness,
until the path disappeared. No lantern to light the way.
I convinced myself that the shining beauty pouring in
was merely an algorithm of the soul. I didn’t know
my silence too was a form of armor, shielding me
from myself, that celestial light shining upon us,
was bearing witness, only I couldn’t see
that armor is no longer needed to let amor in.
This is where the truth begins to let the light in.

WRITERS’ TEARS, a found poem

WRITERS’ TEARS
    — a found poem

As Billy Collins sips his writer‘s tears and segues off
onto golden stories, I think there are no more directives,
or Brooks Brothers’ suits heralding the nine to five,
merely traffic signs in Italy that are mere suggestions
rather than instruction. Merge here. Turn there.
I think of those bleary Monday morning poems
half-scryed on fogged windows, sobbing cold tears,
after a hot shower, as he leans in for a closer shave.
Billy says the poet’s job is to stand at attention,
at the window and make an interesting report about sorrow.
I think of those silly break-up poems that held me back,
it was like taking drugs and reading all the words backwards—
from whose point of view, I don’t know, Leda’s, or the swan’s?
But Billy said sparrows, not sorrows, my ears tangled
in the small-feathered nuances of slant rhyme.

ILLUSION, a somewhat found poem

A broken connection,
loosened a litany
of breakthrough curses
but that wasn’t the lesson.
So much for the creation
of self care.

SEXING THE GENDER OF BELL PEPPERS (drawing)

(found poem)

Flip the bell pepper on end
to reveal its gender.
Count the shiny orbs.
If it has four, it’s female,
full of seeds, but sweeter,
better for eating raw.
If it has three humps, it’s male,
best saved for the stewing pot.

PETRICHOR BOUQUET

The pitter-patter of tiny feet
on the windowsill,
children of the storm,
a petrichor bouquet!
Update: bleedin’ell,
it’s a dragon’s roar now.
Stomping grapes on the roof.
The power just flickered.
There goes the Internet.
Ah, dust and beeswax candles,
the scent of trapped summer
and the corpses of insects.
Power is back on, a garish reminder.
The WiFi gods must be crazy.
The rain is pounding on the roof,
unbelievably noisy,
like thundering hooves
settling into the storm.

FOUND POEM from a Facebook word bubble

Apparently this is my Facebook word bubble. Can't say I want to do a freewrite off of it. But let's have at it.

Summer rains
lemon colored mornings
I resist the call and make petitions
send them to the House
Another federal attack on the arts
by my so-called president
reverbrates around the world.
I am surrounded by women,
good, no, great support.
The camera sees
what it wants to see.
Photos in black & white
I gather my thoughts
my final page of poems
a small endowment
care on the page
What is time? A rock?
But we are California strong
and the water is singing
freedom.

Roving artist epic fail

A Day in the Life of a Teaching Poet: Alexander Valley School Poetry Journal notes.

Dang, managed to get all my teaching gear, light table and drawing supplies, food, clothing packed in the car and I was on the road to Alexander Valley School by 7 AM, only to find when I arrived in the parking lot, I didn't pack my laptop. So I will need to reverse my steps, that's a whole lotta driving hours for today. Bummed. Last night, I was so tired, I fell asleep by 7 PM, otherwise, I would've had it packed. Grrr.

LIFE OF AN ITINERANT ARTIST

Last night I fell asleep on my student journals,
awoke at midnight, disoriented, where am I?
Who am I? Poetry imprinted on my cheeks.
Discombobulated, I forgot to pack my laptop,
or email those student poetry files to myself.
Could've saved myself some grief.
Clearly I was toast. Make that toasted.
Maybe even burnt toast. Ah, the life of a roving artist
was what I wanted? What was I thinking?
Careful what you wish for, but 9 to 5 doesn't suit.

Transliteration gone awry

I was practicing a poem aloud in Irish, but my speech recognition software, Dragon Dictate, was sneakily recording me. It made for a superb word salad of Misa Rafteri. It's so freakin' bizarre, that I had to record it three times just to see if there was any pattern or sense at all. I might go back and see if there is a phrase or two to salvage. But I think it's safe to say that Dragon Dictate does not recognize Irish. Not even tiny a little bit. So much for the Indo-European continuum. It's too weird to even steal lines from.
Cilla long dogfishes crawl the spoiler

wrong thing though she is a master list
soulless for three PhoneMag
if Tisha could get them on the fifth
and May the Mimiga Walla eggs cinnamon

the data must be finished by then

Michelin study Cilla long.
this is crawl the spoiler Gonzalez

they don't see a set of master list

soulless monthly phone

This is the actual poem:

Mise Raifteirí, an file, lán dóchais is grá
I am Raftery, a poet full hope /love

le súile gan solas, ciúineas gan crá,
eyes without light silence without heart

ag dul síos ar m'aistear le solas mo chroí,
at going down on my journey to light my heart

WIKI IS THE NEW OED

The poem's lovely conversational tones sucked me in
and those tight visual descriptions had me flopping
on the proverbial floor for a nice tummy rub.
And maybe I was peckish for some proverbial kibble.
A thousand-year-old lake bed got me to Googling.
I lost an hour there, eons-old? (last Ice Age)
it was part of the Pleistocene Lake Lahontan—
once the largest lake in N. America (900 ft.deep),
Wow. And Lake Tahoe drained into it. Imagine.
I fingered and fondled words I never knew existed:
endorheic lake, pluvial, ephemeral lake, salar, sabkha.
And I learned the difference between playas and hardpans.
Wikipedia is the new OED. I've lost hours hunting words.
OK, now I've gone completely ADD and around the bend:
Did you know Black Rock Desert has fairy shrimp?
Yeah, and on the playa, Anostraca are swimming
among the mammoth bones in the Quinn River sink.
I think your poem's spawned a poem in me....
Talk about a dry period. A desert. This breath ending.
And what about poem #241, inquiring minds need to know.

(UN)BALANCED

 (UN)BALANCED

I am lost, and without words.
The family transports 6 million pieces
of angst into every room. Harbors grudges.
I cannot cope with their collective trauma,
but I am not bitter, perhaps bittersweet.
Only the iron tracks of the train
will beg to defer to derailment.
Last night I watched a constellation
dazzle the horizon with light.
The silver center of the Milky Way
was a talisman. My sorrow, forgotten.
I was a lone candle by the river,
flickering in the summer breeze.
The ears of the night were listening
to coyotes under a full moon. I dreamt
there were rivers of singing stones.
The Apurimac's Andean tears
wept in glaciers, creating pigment
with the tumbled rhythm of stones.

FOUND POEMS

Found Poems

Spirit
and the majesty of an idea
being equal and entitled
shines through
the latter is the impact of segregation
It struggles to make an intellectual adjustment
greater will be the impact to this country's honor
to dissolve the political bands
to assume the powers of the earth,
separate and equal
The laws of nature
entitled them to the opinions
which impel these truths.

Arlen's workshop

That all are endowed
with unalienable rights
life liberty and the pursuit of happiness
It becomes distractive to these ends
To alter or abolish the foundation.
Such form, most likely
should not be changed for light
it causes sufferable forms
of evidence, and evinces a design
of patient sufferance
which constrains them to the end.

so much word soup, legal language didn't quite float my boat, but it was fun coloring out the words we didn't want to keep.

WRONG NUMBER

One AM phone call: a man slurred:
"You'd better come get me.
I can't make it." And hung up.
Wonder if he ever made it home?

ALARMED AND DANGEROUS

What happens when
unsupervised English majors
roam the hallowed halls of academia
with a plenitude of Post-its in hand.
If the door is alarmed,
then, the window must be startled,
and the floor, somewhat taken aback.
It could've been worse.
Students could've been armed
with rapier Sharpies.

WALT WHITMAN

WALT WHITMAN

Beyond the seas
we take up the burden
bequeathed
by the earth—
a clear flame of truth
separated from
theories of religion
as the perfect meaning
is often lost to us
we are more sacred instinct
than the surge and fret of time,
the spirit often lost
while the letter of tradition
is retold with unlimited unction.
a poet's work
this song of America
make us feel the poetic force
These poems touched
with sweeping music
of Time and Space
open the mind.
to sing the first
harmony of the universe
The conjunction of
of poetic vision,
gaze into the future,
the social miseries lose
their finality of woe,
in the eternal human march.

MY LIFE ACCORDING TO SIMON ORTIZ

MY LIFE ACCORDING TO SIMON ORTIZ
—from poem lines & titles by Simon Ortiz

Warriors could have passed this way
on a bright and vivid, feathered wind.
They never saw the mountains chained
by fences, roads and super highways.
The river, a silt-ladened snake, curled
around the wagons rolling across parched plains.
Weather, they reasoned, was barricade enough.
But dreams themselves could have been roads
and it seemed the thunder surged on forever.
The Native mind was stunned by guns, cannons.

Once my mind was a cove of light,
memory, a lost trail of tears.
A dying root, the last buffalo on the cliff.
I know no such sorrow, other than. Than.
I watched the house of dawn breathe
and the words jumped off a bridge.
Amerind, tamarind, the wind. The wind.

The dead woman's road is naming your life
your death seeks gravity. The moon, the moon.
We are frightened by what we do not own.

Wind pushed our dreams into morning.
The land was like an angry oven
dry grasses, rattlesnake wind hissing,
singing of rain, singing. Singing.

The surrender of the sea, surcease—
shivering in anticipation.
I am the power of missing clouds
amid the names of stars.
I am the last buffalo of the heart.

My Life According to (POET) LESSON PLAN

I got a fun poetry "weegie" writing idea from Lorna Dee Cervantes who got it from Shesshu Foster on Facebook. When I first began teaching with CPITS, I used a lot of random cut up writing and word gambling to break up old writing patterns. Word cards, six books and dice, blind Biblical scrying for answers, 8-ball answers, tarot cards, and eavesdropping.

Here’s an updated exercise in a similar vein. You could also use first lines of poems, or several poets—including students. Feel free to break the rules. The only allegiance you owe is to the poem itself.

Using poem titles (or first lines) from one poet, (choose a poet important to you—who is your muse?) and answer the questions using their titles—use as many books as you like.

My Life According to (POET)

Are you a male or female?
Describe yourself:
How do you feel
Describe where you currently live:
If you could go anywhere, where would you go:
Your favorite form of transportation:
What's the weather like:
Favorite time of day:
Your relationships:
Your fear:
What is the best advice you have to give:
If you could change your name, it would be:
Your soul's present condition:

Donna Chamion:My Life According to Neruda

Old women of the shore
emerging
a certain weariness
sonata with some pine trees
goodbye to Paris
dreams of trains
autumn testament
day light with night key
furious struggle between seamen and an octopus of colossal size
fear
through a closed mouth the flies enter
sweetness, always
oh, such bottomless Saturdays!

Maureen Hurley: My Life According to Kinnell

I am the last river
Lost loves. Some song
Fossils. The old life
Two set out on their journey
Another night in the ruins
Vapor trail reflected in the frog pond
The last hiding place of snow
Testament of the thief
There are things I tell no one
Daybreak. Cemetery angels
The road between here and there
The past. The waking
How many nights...

I am the last river
Lost loves. Some song
Fossils. The old life

Another night in the ruins
Vapor trail reflected in the frog pond
The last hiding place of snow
Testament of the thief

FOUND POEM lists —aphohorism chain poem

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear
A chain is no stronger than its weakest link
A rolling stone gathers no moss
After the storm comes the calm
All aren't hunters that blow the horn
As green as grass
As is the gardener so is the garden
As you sow, so shall you reap
Better to go back than go wrong
By hook or by crook
Deeds are fruits, words are but leaves.
