Timothy Green, of Rattle Magazine, is proposing a new category for unpublished poems, dismissing poems published on social media or in blogs as being unpublished. I am all for the uncurated poem idea, because I use my blog as my notebook. Yet I can hardly consider my poems published because I post them in my blog. I have a readership of 12 people and I think all of those are web crawlers. Somebody could easily say, well why not just take your blog off-line and use it that way? Good question, but, what’s the point? Knowing that my blog is online, and knowing that somebody might read them, makes me tighten up my chops. No time for slovenliness. No time for cliché. At this advanced stage everything I write is all or nothing. I think a 40 year apprenticeship is long enough. Besides, I can’t find my poems anymore. I have far too many children to commit them all to paper. And Google’s Blogger search engine sucks at retrieving them. But at least, if they’re online, I stand a chance of finding my poems again.
