So Emily once said forever might be short
and since I’ve been short forever, barely reaching
my own lofty height, proscribed or otherwise.
And if to be an elder means pain, I am old enough today.
I’ve got the pain part down cold after a shovel incident,
I eat CBDs and sleep on a heating pad of misplaced desire.
And, I think I’ve got the old part down as well, as I’m pushing 70.
Emily said, the second half of joy is always shorter than the first—
by far, because you already know what to expect, don’t you?
