Not dinky music

Someone mentioned bluegrass, and made an odd face, calling it dinky music. I was just ‘splaining to a friend, that during Béla’s Fleck’s virtual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass set, there was bluegrass, there was country, there was jazz, there was folk, soul, blues with classical overtones all rolled up and compacted into one tune. Breathtakingly complex, intricate riffs, the composition, infinitely satisfying. The sudden insight that I was watching a maestro at work. Nothing simple about it when someone’s music makes you all weepy and it gives you delicious chickenskin to boot. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, when you least expect it, music moves you the most. Pure alchemy at work. Thank you, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass for making it so.

You can watch the pre-recorded sets at the HSB channel, via ROKU or Apple TV, but Béla Fleck’s live set in China Basin was not recorded.
