During the flood, herons and egrets dine on amphibians, crustaceans, and rodents. A whole new smorgasbord of surf and turf. Colonies of egrets line the temporary shores of the vernal pools. At some of the pools, the stately great egrets gather as if Congress were in session, and at others, small egrets bicker and dine on leftovers. The seagulls do their worm dance in the mud to hunt for earthworms. Fording a seasonal stream crossing Todd Road, the underbelly of my car has never been so clean.
