STROMATOLITES, BAHÍA CONCEPCIÓN

One Easter during the late 1980s, I was standing on a boulder,
on Playa Santispac, overlooking the Sea of Cortez,
when I realized the rock I was standing on, was strange,
then, that sudden flash of insight, it was no boulder,
but a stromatolite colony—a city of bluegreen algae,
the first I Am the earth uttered. Words failed me,
I yelled a primal scream, startling campers and shore birds.
The colony was surrounded by strange commas in the sand,
small carcasses of dried baby hammerhead sharks,
the size of pencils, as if trying to swim away.
