Sodden thought—in Lincoln's era, I would've voted Republican because of civil rights—they were considered radical liberals and believed in social welfare for all. But the Democrats were still firmly stuck in the antibellum era. Mostly Southern slave owners. Filibusters, and 3/5 vote for African Americans. But women didn't have the vote until June 4,1919. Happy centennial anniversary for the passing of the19th Amendment. Now the Democrats are perceived as the liberals promoting too much social welfare. How far the pendulum has swung.
