YELLOW

This is the time of year
when the shy cherry blossom
declares herself, the great I AM
a flurry of white and pink
amid the drab green chaparral
on the hills surrounding San Quentin
but this spring she is noted
by her profound absence
only the invading species
strut their true colors:
broom, pampas, acacia.
