At
the San Juan Bautista mission, after hours, outwaiting traffic, we
sneaked in through the back garden gate where I was greeted by a cat who was born
without ears, and for our trespass fee, she wanted a belly rub. Pronto! She had a nice thick coat but was in need of grooming. She doesn't get a lot of pets from what I can gather.
She
was a sweetheart. Earless
kitty, no scar tissue, the outer fur made a nice fat lip. Perhaps she had
cancer of the ears, she is a white cat. But they didn't look malformed. And she twitched her stumps. I never realized how
much I depend upon their ears to read their emotions. I didn't want to
get chomped for rubbing her belly....but she really wanted a belly rub and a head scratch. So I obliged.
She's
not a Scottish fold cat, as their ears are bent over. I don't know if it's a weird mutation or a new breed. She has a
little igloo nest with a foam pillow and a blankie, her nest is surrounded by statues of saints... clearly she is loved. Ears, or no ears.

You met our Mission cat, Sula. She is a Turkish Van cat; they are mostly in the Middle East, pretty rare in the USA and did not appear in the West until 1954. (I personally have a cat that is a Turkish Van -- he is red where Sula is grey -- you can find information on line.)
Sula lost her ears to cancer, and she wrote a book about it. Well, I wrote it, but it was her voice. It is called Surviving Cancer, One Cat's Story. She has written three other books and is hard at work on a fourth. They are all on line under the author's name: Sula, Parish Cat at Old Mission.
Yes, she is much loved, and she wanted a belly rub because everyone gives them to her.
You can become Sula's friend if you have a FaceBook account: https://www.facebook.com/Sula-909598572467537/. She has many friends, and she keeps them informed of what is happening. A lady named Stacy writes for her.
Dear Betty,
Thank you for writing to me and resolving the mystery of Sula the Van Cat. She was a real sweetheart, and followed me as I took photos of the mission. She had many things to say to me, but I wasn’t at all familiar with her Turkish dialect. So, do you have trouble keeping her out of the fountain? As I recall, Van cats like to swim. Sula is the first Van cat I’ve ever met...nice to know this backstory—even after all this time.
Sorry I didn’t post this sooner, Blogger quit notifying me when people posted comments for all of 2018. And it was a fluke that I even went to the Awaiting Comments section. Usually I despair that no one is reading my blog!
