To SFO and Mexico
Worried deep in the gut, I look upon the scene of the bay as if for the last time. Anyway it's true, it is for the last time, because when I return, I will be a different person.
Last night I dreamt I had crabs and lost my pubic hair disease. Dis-ease. As in sexual. I slept in John's bed and I don't have the heart of a woman going 6000 miles to be reunited with her lover. Last night he told me he loved me, but in the same breath he said that he didn't want me to come to Mexico. But he had no way to reach me to tell me not to come.
I like the lifestyle, the excitement, the cultural exposure, that John has shown me, but do I still even like the man? I say I don't know how I feel. I have my doubts. When he tells me he loves me, I don't believe him. He says, Look we'll be together for a month, let's make the most of it. I'm not so sure of that either.

John's housesitter friend whom I like very much, Joanna, is contemplating leaving her husband. A girlfriend spends the night. We talk of cats, leukemia and AIDS. She gives me a ride to the air shuttle. I forgot my knee brace. Backpacks are incredibly heavy. I'm afraid that my knee won't make it and fear has made a home in my gut.
I am a reluctant traveler. I am sorry to leave home and to leave my neighbor Richard. I've enjoyed his company through this madness, but there's no future in it.
At the ticket counter, the clerk tells two young blonde gringas that this is the baggage claim you'll need in Puerto Vallarta. She says it three times, but they're not listening. When she gets their attention, she says here's your two tickets to Istanbul. They don't catch that either.
The airline clerk asks what seat do I want. I say; In the middle, please, between two fat cigar-smoking gentleman. And not by the window. She laughs. Gives me a window seat.

Another woman recounts a lively story of travel in Mexico. After a Mutt and Jeff escapade with a wild Airporter driver who managed to permanently stall the car, they board the plane, late.
And the plane is delayed another hour because they're waiting for Senior López. The captain then announces that Senior López has not decided not to fly today after all. Late for their next flight, they tell the agent to hold up the plane, for Senior López, but the captain doesn't oblige.
