—for Meridel LeSueur & Sharon Doubiago
The mindful trust of this body is held
in the blind spots of the eye; a memory
of the prairie where Crazy Horse last
stood. Flowers grow naked on the graves
of those whose blood nourished the soil
a hundred years after the last buffalo
robe rotted into dust. The circling
sparrowhawk encompasses the souls
of those who were lost in anger, hatred,
and in feat. A song of sorrow for those
who walk alone.
