BETWEEN AIR AND MATTER

When words barely scratch the surface,
like a swimmer, frog-kicking across the pond,
when dark things call us into the shallows,
like watercress, pondscum, or duckweed,
not the mauve flowers of the water hyacinth
depleting oxygen from the waterways
until fish drown in their own element.
The quick movement before a splash,
a frog jumps, coming up for air, gasping,
straddling a world between air and matter.
