NaHaiWriMo November prompts (abodes)

“Welcome to November NaHaiWriMo! The posts this month will deal with creations, starting with a week of dwellings. Let’s try something different this month. Perhaps write a 3-5-3 haiku, or a monoku (single line), or write a poem that deals with the prompt without using the prompt word. Enjoy exploring the options. Please post your poems inspired by this prompt as comments in response to this posting.”

Visit the website too as I tend to fall off the wagon, and not stay the distance of the month. It could be because writing haiku tends to bore me silly. Maybe I should switch to haibun, to haikai or renga.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 1 , 2023: CABIN

AUTUMN ARRIVES LATE

leaves scuttle and dance
Smoke rises from a cabin in deep woods
woodpecker resumes his carpentry.

11/3/23

I lived in an old cabin
abandoned walnut orchard
slumps back into the mud.

11/3/23

Old walnut orchard
Cabin keeps vigil for signs
Still praying for rain.

11/3/23

DELUGE

Trees thirsting for rain
Cabin keeps an eye on things
Clouds weep in the orchard.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 2 , 2023: TEEPEE

SACRED GEOMETRY

Summer tee-pee packed up
tent poles intersect and rise up
trebuchet to the stars.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 3 , 2023: LEAN-TO

UNDER STARS

Lean-to leans into
the wind, pushes back the night
Meteor showers!

11/5/23

FIRST REAL STORM

Rain pounding the tent
the orchard sheds its last leaves
ablaze with promise.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 4 , 2023: COTTAGE

MY GRANDMOTHER’S LAST WISH

Where she wanted to live—
a cottage in a bee-loud glade
The wind sang in verse.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 5 , 2023: HOUSEBOAT

KING TIDE, SAUSALITO MUDFLATS

Outgoing spring tide
houseboat defies gravity
settles by the hearth.

In the mudflats, trails
Starfish constellations lead
to the sea, the sea.

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 6 , 2023: BROWNSTONE

BICOASTAL DREAMS

Brownstones are as New York
as Victorians are to SF
with no snow flurries

The NaHaiWriMo prompt for Nov 7 , 2023:  SKYSCRAPER

SKYSCRAPER

Each spire outdoing the other,
reaching for the clouds, birds nest
in their buttresses.

Lone falcon weaves twigs
on a ledge, hoping to find
love in the city.

11/5/23

LAST LANDFILL DANCE

Salesforce tower leans
hard left toward the bus depot
to get out of Dodge.

Actually I have many haiku with varying degrees of success. Click on the word haiku at the bottom of this post. During the pandemic, Chad Sweeney posted many haiku prompts. I often write haiku in linked triads. I also cheat a bit by giving my haiku a title.

June haiku

July haiku
