The cat circles and weaves the ankles 

of women weeping over faithless spouses 

& loved ones who love the depths of the bottle,

or the sting of the needle more than life itself.

The cat cries, gently cuffs them for attention,

but they ignore her teachings—history repeats 

itself, and the moment crests on a wave,  

rides toward an uncertain future, 

perhaps in a different form, 

then slips back into the void.
