ON WRITING

Carolyn Forché once said:
You must always be at the ready,
each day, every day, always be
at the ready, and wait for it—
wait for the muse to come to you.
I've spent ages waiting & it seems
nothing happens. Empty bowl.
I've no idea where writing comes from,
mostly from random Facebook posts
these days. No social media angel,
the muse doesn't visit often, usually when
I have some deadline, like taxes,
but when she does, it's like riding a rocket.
I hold on for dear life, wrestling with language
in all its wartiness, and hope it resembles
something like the inner music in my head.
