Gulf Oil Spill:Deepwater Horizon

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig fire has exposed the obscene behaviour of the world’s fourth-largest corporation, British Petroleum (BP). No other country has been ravaged by BP as much as Iran. BP was founded in 1902 as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) to exploit Iran's oil reserves. And now BP exploits the Gulf of Mexico.

Heartbreaking images of dying dolphins trying to breathe, watching the oil fires...
This is probably the greatest crime of the century because of the long-term ecological consequences. See video.

During Beltaine, 1989, I had a series of disturbing dreams where old men were setting the Gulf water on fire. I did not understand the imagery‚ it was too horrible to conceive. One line made it into this poem. I assumed it was a Gulf War image. But now I see that I was lucid dreaming. Another Gulf.
When the first big oil spill hit San Francisco/Bay Area—I was assigned to cleaning up Wildcat Beach. This was before it was a national park—still private ranchlands. They hauled us out in cattle trucks. Standing room only. Later, when I backpacked there with a 5th grade class in 1989, I had a series of dreams about the sea being on fire. Hence the poem.

I was just shocked—after I viewed that video on the gulf yesterday—that the images were strikingly similar to my dreams of 1989. They left me devastated, shaken to the core...and so, here we are.
